Cha-Cha-Cha-Changes

Monday, August 31st, 2009

I moved!

Well, sort of. My boyfriend’s (soon to be former) roommate hasn’t exactly vacated (or packed), so the apartment is stuffed to the gills with boxes, furniture, and a mish-mash of stuff.

You truly don’t realize how much stuff you have until is all squeezed into one little room, which is odd since it didn’t look like much going into the truck.

Either way, my clothes are all a mess. I was crawling around, jumping over boxes and dodging around bookcases last night just to find a pair of brown shoes that would go with a dress I luckily had packed away to wear last week but never did.

I also don’t know where my tripod is, and I don’t have a full length mirror set up yet (or a place to put it) so I will spare you all from being subjected to an outfit post this morning.

I will however share my nightmare of a living room with you. (Note: these photos were taken after we started unpacking and organizing. There was no way I could take a picture of the pile before then). Enjoy! (you also get a sneak peak at the wall colors!)

P.S! My parents are coming next weekend (yes I have less than 6 days to get the house together), and I’m looking for some cool new recommendations for restaurants in the Brooklyn area, especially Sunday brunch!

ALSO, be sure to check back later this week for posts on my new and improved well-organized closet, crafty apartment DIYs, and outfit posts! Lots to come!

Daily Clips

Friday, August 28th, 2009

When I first moved to New York, one of my major responsibilities at my job was to do the “daily clips”.

Every morning before 10 am (my deadline to have everything done, emailed, out the door, and waiting on my boss’ desk), I would run around the office grabbing copies of every newspaper, daily tabloid, magazine, online article, or blog post that could be in any way related to the company I worked for, one of our competitors, or the industry in general.

Then I would clip, scan, paste, and sort the articles until my fingers were stained with ink, create an index of everything included, and make a PDF. The PDF was emailed to everyone in the company, including the European office. Then I printed out the entire report, twice. (This was the hardest part as I could never get it done before everyone else showed up for work, and always ended up fighting over the printer as I had to print 200+ pages and my deadline was ticking away).

Once the report was printed, I went back through and highlighted (in pink) any quotes referencing the company and tagging them (with pretty white tags). Then the report was bound and placed on the respected executives desks, and I could finally breathe. The rest of the day was scattered with other duties, including tagging monthly magazines for ads, editorials, and similar mentions, but that’s another story.

Anyways, my point is that now, even though I don’t have to do daily clips every morning, I still find myself doing it for me. I barely watch TV, so I get most of my news from the internet. Every morning, I find myself scanning the internet (or sometimes reading the Post or the Times over someones shoulder on the subway) to keep up on the news of the day and the trending topics of the industry. Note that this is in addition to my daily blog-roll. I read blogs for fun and inspiration, not to get my news.

I wanted to share my personal daily clips with all of you, and see if you had any favorites that you wanted to add to my list!

I know this may all look excessive, but it’s really not bad (especially when you don’t have a 10am deadline). I use an RSS feed like Google Reader or Bloglovin to organize and prioritize the articles I want/need to read, and my twitter dashboard does the same. I also use Google Alerts,  you can search for any topic you like and have a daily email sent to you summarizing the internet buzz around your keyword. I love all these tools!

Tongue Tied And Twisted

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

Daily Outfit: August 26, 2009

When:
August 26, 2009

What:
Tee Shirt: Express
Denim Pencil Skirt: J Crew
Necklaces: Forever 21 and Very Vintage, Savannah, Ga.
Shoes: Nine West
Bag: Sabina

Where:
Work

Why:

*My apologies for the squinty “angry” face, I left my sunnies up in the apartment and the morning light was too harsh I guess.

With most of my belongings packed away in boxes, it’s rather hard to decide on an outfit in the morning. I tried to set aside pieces I felt like wearing, and attempted to only pack out of season clothes and pieces I’ve worn in the past week. Alas, getting dressed this morning was still extremely difficult. I fished out this simple skirt (that I’m thinking of hemming at least 2″ inches) and Tee Shirt. I think the cozy, classic simplicity of this outfit goes with my theme of the week: black cotton pieces, glitzy necklaces, simple silhouettes.

Next week, when my new wardrobe is all set up, and I can see all of my shoes, accessories, and dresses before I get dressed, I will be more creative and exciting. I promise.

Fall Jewels

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

Girls, it’s time to dig into your costume trunks (or mother’s and grandmother’s jewelry boxes), layered bibs and glitzy bobbles are in for fall! I am loving all of the embellished, yet antique looking jewelry on trend right now.

In the midst of my move (3 more days!), I can’t really pull out all my crafting tools and do my own DIYs, but I wanted to put together a little wall of inspiration, grabbing pieces from all ends of the fashion universe, but unfortunately to my delighted surprise all I could find were absolute steals! Stores like Forever 21, Target, Urban Outfitters, and Kohl’s have the best jewelry for fall (which also happen to be the best prices). So ignore to lack of diversity in my trend board. Rejoice at the fact that you wont have to spend so much to look so good this season.

The Glamourai posted a similar post on her blog yesterday, outlining a DIY for how to create your very own fringe bib necklace using broken chains you probably have sitting at the bottom of your jewelry box right now. Check out her DIY here, and if your budget is a tad bigger than mine, check out her beautiful handmade creations at the Glamporium!

Loosen Up

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

Daily Outfit: August 25, 2009

When:
August 25, 2009

What:
Blouse: Banana Republic
Jeans: 7 for All Mankind
Belt: Urban Outfitters
Shoes: Nine West
Sunnies: Urban Outfitters

Where:
Work

Why:

I bought this simple white blouse (along with about 3-4 others) just after graduation. I was headed to New York for a round of job interviews and was so nervous about what to wear. I was wearing this blouse, tucked into a black Kenzie pencil skirt, on the interview that changed it all and brought me up to New York. Being that I have now surpassed my 1 year New Yorker-aversary, I thought it was applicable to don this piece again. I love the pleating at the neckline and mandarin feel of the collar, but it also has flouncy little bubble sleeves that add a feminine touch.

I felt like being comfortable today, both outside in the heat, and inside the frigid air conditioning of my office. A cardigan just works so well to warm up a light outfit, I can’t get enough of them this season.

Fashion Swoon

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

As we prepare to say goodbye to summer and hello to fall (one of my favorite seasons) I thought it was fitting to revisit a beautiful spread fro Elle Italy’s April 2009 issue featuring Milla Jovovich photographed by Matt Jones.

Enjoy!

As The Traffic Rushes By

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

Daily Outfit: August 24, 2009

When:
August 24, 2009

What:
Dress: Loehmann’s
Necklace: F21
Shoes: Calvin Klein
Sunnies: Urban Outfitters

Where:
Work

Why:

Back to work on Monday from a mini-vacation in Canada. Wanted to look professional, but be comfortable in the humid weather. The lightweight dress is super comfy, but the glitzy necklace and pumps dress is up a bit. Just a cute outfit for hanging out on the dirty streets of Brooklyn.

I was inspired to get the necklace from all of the beautiful jewelery I’ve been seeing on the web lately, mostly inspired by The Glamourai. Her designs are amazing, and I wish I could afford even a ring from her “Glamporium” but unfortunately jewels that lovely are outside of my budget range at the moment. I’ll settle for the cheaper costume version in the meantime. I really love wearing glitzy pieces to dress up simple outfits. I think I’ll be doing this a lot this fall. Nothing better than a tee shirt, jeans , and a cascade of pearls and diamonds.

Happy Monday!

Weekend Wedding

Monday, August 24th, 2009

Daily Outfit: August 22, 2009

When:
August 22, 2009

What:
Purple Dress: Zara
Gold Chain Necklace: Vintage, my mother’s (possibly grandmother’s)
Gold and Peral Earings: Very Vintage, Savannah, Ga. (Since Closed)
Bracelets: Free People and Street Vendor
Shoes: Stuart Weitzman
Bag: Aldo

Where:
Weekend Wedding in Toronto, ON

Why:

One of the best friends I have made since moving to New York got married this past weekend in her home town of Toronto. It was a spectacular event, and one of the best parties I have ever been to. I have never danced so much at a wedding (best DJ ever!). So in between stuffing our faces, and dancing till our feet bled (I was an unfortunate casualty of the dance floor later that night), I was able to snag a few photos of my outfit.

I wish Julia and Craig the best, thank you so much for sharing your special day!

September Issues

Friday, August 21st, 2009

Oh, you know, just a little reading for the plane ride. Not sure Canada is far enough away for me to get through it all.

I almost hate subscribing to magazines because I get them days (sometimes weeks) after they’ve been released on stands. I don’t like having to wait!

Will definitely be sharing ideas, opinions, and favorites when i get through them all.

Have A Round On Me

Friday, August 21st, 2009

I’m leaving… on a jet plane. I’ll spare you my singing voice (and the rest of the song), but I am going out of town.

I’ll be off to Toronto for the weekend for a friend’s wedding. This means two things: 1) There will most likely, undoubtably NOT be an outfit post today 2) Come Monday there may be lots of Canadian goodies on the blog, including wedding photos and night life in Toronto (any recommendations on where to go?)

So, in the absence of an outfit, I have provided a round on me… a round of links that is. Enjoy!
