Breaking All The Rules

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

Daily Outfit: August 20, 2009

When:
August 20, 2009

What:
Jersey Shift Dress: F21
Belt: Old Navy
Leggings: Simply Vera
Necklace: H&M
Shoes: GoJane
Sunnies: Aldo

Where:
Work and Lots of Erands

Why:

I ordered this dress for the color. I’m really trying to branch out of my comfort zone and switch up my style (which could be why I look so inconsistent all the time).

I’m not completely comfortable today. This dress wouldn’t usually be my first choice, but I’m trying to branch out.  The boxy cut, the bright print, the light weight jersey, the elastic waist, the crew neck… I could go on, but my point is there are so many things going on with this dress that I would never have worn 6 months ago. I’m working on breaking all of my personal fashion rules, and going back to square one. I think this is a good experiment, and I hope to really discover my true style once I break through all the fashion “do’s and don’ts” walls that I have built up over the years.

What are some of your personal fashion rules?

Business Casual

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Daily Outfit: August 19, 2009

When:
August 19, 2009

What:
Blazer: Calvin Klein, Thrifted
Tissue V Neck Tee Shirt: J Crew
Jeans: BDG, Urban Outfitters
Booties: Calvin Klein (Bloomingdales Sale!)
Belt: H&M
Bracelets: Top Shop
Knot Pendant: Peddler Jim’s, Savannah, Ga. (Since Closed)
Simple Bee Necklace: Goregousredhead via Esty (Since Closed?)
Sunnies: Jacksonville, Fl. Souvenir shop ($5!)
Bag: Sabina

Where:
Work and Post-Work Erands

Why:

To make up for yesterday’s lack of photos (due to technical difficulties) I am posting LOTS of photos today, so enjoy!

I wanted something simple today. I dressed up yesterday, and took lots of photos for the “day to night” Weardrobe contest. Guess it just wasn’t meant to be, all those photos crashed my memory card. So I threw on this super comfy Tee and then worked around that to create a professional, work-appropriate look. A blazer, tailored skinny jeans, great booties, and just a touch of gold sparkle bring the Tee-Shirt out of the weekend rotation.

I love these sunglasses because I bought them while on a road-trip in college. I was writing an editorial for a Travel Writing class, so obviously we had to travel somewhere. A friend and I hopped in the car and drove down to Jacksonville, Fl. for the Tall Ships Festival. I was a deckhand on the Schooner Ernestina back in 2000, so the festival is dear to my heart, and I was very excited to be around large ships and crazy pirates. While stopping in at a souvenir shop I found these sunglasses and knew I had to take them home. I think I appropriately dubbed them my “Mary Kate and Ashley” sunnies.

So there it is… Happy Wednesday!

Fashion Tricks and Secret Weapons:

Downy Wrinkle Releaser

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

I am going to share my#1 top secret fashion trick that I use almost every day. Downy Wrinkle Releaser. It may seem like a simple idea, but have you used it recently?

picture-1

After your clothes come back from the dry cleaner or from being laundered, it would be nice to think that everything gets hung up properly and neatly folded away. Unfortunately clothes aren’t always properly cared for, and our wardrobes quickly outgrow diminutive storage solutions. After folding and pressing and shoving and fitting just one more dress into your closet things get, well… wrinkled.

Either the night before, or in the morning when you’re getting ready (it really depends on the fabric of the garment and how bad the wrinkles are) simply spray your outfit with a mist of this wonder serum, hang it out in the open (the back of a door is best) and go about your business getting ready.

By the time you have showered, done your hair, makeup, eating breakfast, etc. the fibers in your garment will have relaxed back to their natural position and your clothes will look as though they are freshly pressed from the cleaners! Its amazing, I invite you all to try it.

Downy suggests the Wrinkle Releaser works best with “casual clothes” (i.e cotton, jersey, denim), but I primarily use it for silks, chiffon, and dry-clean only fabrics that I’m afraid to scorch with an iron.

If you use Downy Wrinkle Releaser (if dont go try it now!) or any other fashion miracle trick, tell me about! send me an email or comment below. I would love to share your tips and tricks!

Monday, Olé

Daily Outfit: August 17, 2009

When:
August 17, 2009

What:
Vintage Mexican Dress: Dulcinée at Brooklyn Flea
Vintage Rose Belt: Sammy Davis Vintage
Vintage Canvas and Cork Wedges: Vendor at Brooklyn Flea
Shorts (hidden): Old Navy
Headband: Banana Republic
“L” typewriter bracelet: Vendor at Artists & Fleas
St. Croix’s Hook Bracelet: Gift
Posey Bracelet: Katheryn Riechert via Shop SCAD

Where:
Work and Monday Margaritas

Why:

I’ve never been able to buy something and then let it sit in my closet for days, weeks, months. Usually I run home and want to put my new threads on right away, so I am pretty proud that I actually made it a whole 48 hours before wearing any of the great pieces I found while rummaging the Brooklyn Flea on Saturday with Pamela. Check out a play by play of our adventures at the Brooklyn Flea on her blog here.

This red dress just jumped out at me. I’m trying to expand my wardrobe, incorporate more color, more vintage, and different cuts and styles. I tried this dress on at least 10 different ways before my “wardrobe advisers” insisted I wear it like this (with black shorts underneath). I think I liked it better some of the other ways I styled it, but oh well, this just means I already know how I’m going to remix this and wear it again. I love the ease of a slip-on sheath, and the shoes were too cute to pass up (especially at $10).

Overall I’m proud I’m stepping it up and wearing a cute Monday outfit. Have a good week everyone!

Up On The Roof

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Daily Outfit: August 12, 2009

When:
August 12, 2009

What:
Kimono Wrap Sweater: I have no idea! (so sorry!)
Black Ribbed Tank: H&M
Jeans: BDG from Urban Outfitters
Broach: Peddler Jim’s, Savannah (Since Closed…. very sad)
Necklace: Very Vintage, Savannah (Since Closed)
Bracelets: Free People, and Street Vendor
Shoes: Go Jane

Where:
Work

Why:

I have to apologize, I didn’t realize so much of my outfit either came from stores that no longer exist (so sad) or that I don’t even know where I got the item. This kimono sleeve jersey sweater has been sitting in my dresser for ever. I think I bought as a cozy thing to throw on for erands or to wear around the house, now if only I could remember where I got it. I got the idea to layer the pieces from an outfit I saw on the train on my comute home last night (I get so much inspiration from people watching).

Anyways, I wrapped the kimono around and fastened this filigree feather broach to hold in place. The broach is from this amazing store called Peddler Jim’s that used to be in City Market Savannah, Ga. It was the best combination of a thrift store, a vintage consignment/antique store, and a flea market. He sold everything from old desks and dressforms to sea-glass and old books. In the back of the store was this nasty bin full of old estate and costume jewelery. You got a bowl and could fill it with whatever you wanted, then Jim would glance at your treasures and call out a number.”Five Dollars”. “Two Dollars”. It was never more than $10 for anything and it was all gorgeous and so worth the disinfecting process after you’d been digging in that bin. I have TONS of finds from this store and lots of ideas for DIY’s in the future… let’s see if I get to them anytime soon.

Also note, until this date I had never been on my roof. I dont know why. I’ve been on plenty of roofs in Brooklyn, just never had a reason to venture up to my own…. and what a view. I don’t think you can see in these pictures but I have a PRIME view of the Empire State building. I guess I’ll need to find more reasons to go up there before I move next month! Watch out for more photos from the roof!

Blues Traveler

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

Daily Outfit: August 11, 2009

When:
August 11, 2009

What:
Polka Dot Blouse: Beacon’s Closet
Lace Camisole: Gap
Wide-Leg Trouser Jean: 7 For All Mankind
Belt: Ralph Lauren
Charm and Bead Necklace: World Market
Bangles: Top Shop
Shoes: Tahari from Marshall’s
Bag: Sabina NY

Where:
Work

Why:

Still having camera difficulties, so apologies for the blurry, oddly focused pics… I’m working on it.

I’ve had these jeans forever and I absolutely LOVE them. They have a 36″ inseam, which is great because I’m tall AND I wear heels… but I’m not that tall. I hemmed them back in college, but the stitching ripped and I never bothered to fix it. I started wearing skinny jeans more and shorter boot-cuts I could wear with heels, so these were just pushed to the back of the closet.

Last night I was on a mission, tackling my to-do list left and right, running around the apartment looking for things that I had been meaning to fix, clean, put away, take care of, etc. Then I caught sight of these jeans, grabbed a needle and threat and sat down determined to sit still long enough to do a decent hem.

Well it worked. This morning this is all I wanted to put on. It’s still very hot in New York with threats of afternoon thunderstorms, and I’m running out of sundresses and skirts to don on these damp humid days. So here’s my ode to a cooler fall. Happy Tuesday!
