Sugar and Spice

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Daily Outfit: September 30, 2009

When:
September 30, 2009

What:
Floral Sundress: Urban Outfitters
Black Tights: ?
Double Wrap Belt: Banana Republic
Leather Jacket: Cute Leather Shop in LES (forget the name)
Necklace: Souvenir from Sacre Coeur, Paris
Black Strapy Booties: F21

Where:

Work

Why:

Sugar and spice and everything nice.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present you with the first tights of Fall. Seriously! I don’t know how I have managed to stay away from wearing tights this long into the season, but this morning there was such a cold snap in the air that bit you to the bone. I nearly froze standing still for photos. (I finally discovered New Yorkers walk so fast to stay warm).

I layered back leather and floral elements to create a a cute juxtaposition in my outfit. It’s still too warm for peacoats, but leather jackets are perfect! I love this bulky sweater / light jacket Fall weather.

There’s just something so yummy about this season, you know what I mean? Okay maybe I’m rambling.

Anyways, I dealt with a similar problem as Mel did yesterday.

I was planning on wearing a long cardi around the office, but know that would look weird under the cropped jacket so I just carried it. Now I realize I never took photos with the cardi on to show how I actually wore the outfit today. But anyways, I’m wearing a long camel colored cardi from Zara.

Back With A Bang

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Daily Outfit: September 28, 2009

When:
September 28, 2009

What:
Poison Ivy Skirt: French Connection
Camisole: H&M
Blazer: H&M
Double Wrap Belt: Banana Republic
Bracelets: Katheryn Riechert via Shop SCAD and “L” typewriter bracelet via Artists & Fleas
Chain Necklace: Very Vintage Savannah (since closed)
Purple Suede and Leather Wedges: Pink Studio

Where:

Work and Meetings in Manhattan

Why:

I decided to come back to New York from my extra long weekend down south with a bang. Here is a pop of color in a bright and crazy print (so not me, but I love it… so maybe it is me), paired with a tailored blazer for an office appropriate “back-to-work” look.

The belt is my new favorite thing; ever. I got the itch to find a double wrap belt after seeing how Liz was sinching in her sillouette for fall (I didn’t see until today that she wore a similar outfit this weekend).

Also, I am a sucker for purple shoes. I only have a few pairs, but they are all my favorites. So rich and yet so simple, I feel like these wedges keep the look from looking to bland and “corporate” without looking like I’m trying to be some crazy fashionista-model type. I get enough comments as it is on how “over dressed” I am for work.

So there you have it, a bright and shinny start to what I hope will be a great week. I don’t have many photos from the weekend as it rained most all of Saturday and Sunday was full of tearful goodbyes.

Hope you all enjoyed your weekends!

In The Garden of Good and Evil

Friday, September 25th, 2009

Daily Outfit: September 25, 2009

When:
September 25, 2009

What:
Vintage Ombre Patterned Dress: Jelly Roll Vintage from The Brooklyn Flea
Lace Camisole: Old Navy
Bracelets: Erica Weiner via Market Publique Pop Up Shop and Gift from Mom
Flip Flops: Old Navy (because I forgot to pack shoes that went with this dress)

Where:

Lunch at Gryphon Tea Room and Shopping Around Savannah

Why:

The photos aren’t from Bonaventure Cemetery (original home of the “Bird Girl” from the cover of  Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, but I wanted to show off some of Savannah’s famed history and charm. . The photos are from Colonial Park Cemetery downtown, only because I could walk there.

The weeping Spanish moss hanging from the Great Oak trees, the old history, the tales of ghosts and hauntings; Savannah’s a beautiful place and I proudly call it “home” (even though I was born and raised in Boston).

Colonial Park is one of the oldest cemeteries in the country with lots of history that I could bore you with, as one of my first jobs in college was as a Ghost Tour guide for the City of Savannah, but I wont.

I was so excited when I found this lovely dress at the Brooklyn Flea and I knew it was perfect for Savannah. It was a little hot today, but I felt very southern in my bright little dress running around Savannah, saying “hi” to old friends.

I’m here for a few more days, so who knows my next photo may be of me sitting on Forest Gump’s bench (or at least where it should be)! Hope you all enjoy your weekend!

True Blue

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

Daily Outfit: September 22, 2009

When:
September 22, 2009

What:
Navy Wrap Blouse: H &M
Jeans: F21
Gold Flats: Payless
Bead and Chain Necklace:  Happy Hill Vintage via The Brooklyn Flea
Vintage Bracelet: Erica Weiner via Market Publique Pop Up Shop
Sunnies: Souvenir Shop in Jacksonville, FL

Where:

Work

Why:

I was feeling particularly uninspired this morning. I mean, extremely uninspired.

All of my morning websites were failing me; Style Caster, Look Book, Weardrobe, all of them. My mind was blank.

And as I sifted through my closet, anything exciting that jumped out at me needed serious attention via either with an iron, a lint roller, a needle and thread. Nothing wanted to be worn this morning.

So I grabbed this wrap blouse (I can’t even remember the last time I wore this) and gave it a quick once over with an iron and a lint roller. Paired with a straight leg jean and simple metallic flats. I spiced up my “no effort” look with this brand new necklace I bought from Happy Hill Vintage at the Brooklyn Flea this past weekend and this gold vintage bangle.

Pure, simple, true blue! That’s what you get people!

Big thanks to my new camera man (who has been waking up extra early to help me with my photos). I think all the practice is improving his photography skills!

Lots of exciting things happening to wrap up the week, so stay posted for the adventures to come!

In Technicolor

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Daily Outfit: September 21, 2009

When:
September 21, 2009

What:
Green Embroidered Skirt: Marshall’s
White V Neck Tee: Old Navy
Striped Cardigan: Urban Outfitters
Shoes: Tahari
Sunnies: Boyfriend’s Ray Bans

Where:

Work

Why:

I never wear color. Or at least I rarely do; and when I do, I certainly don’t mix colors, textures, and patterns. Such bold experimentation is reserved for the tried and true neutrals; grey, black, camel, and white.

Well here you go people! Not only am I wearing green AND purple, but I’m wearing a floral embroidered skirt with a stripe! Patterns and stripes? Who am I?

Alright, it’s not that crazy, but it is out of my comfort zone.

I did not want to wear this today. I took one look in the mirror and wanted to grab a plain lavender cardi, or scarf (much like how I styled the skirt previously here). But I sucked it up, and I’m kinda proud I did it.

I enjoyed wearing something a little different. I hemmed this skirt about 3 1/2 inches last night and really wanted to wear it. This morning while posing in the perfect sunlight I almost felt like I should be hanging out with Alice in Wonderland and heading to the Mad Hatters Tea Party.

Midday I realized I forgot to put on the ring and necklace I had planned (running out the door in a hurry I guess) and I wish I had worn some more accessories and jewelry for the photos. but I didn’t…

Anyway this was a great way to start the week. I had a great day and have some prospects for amazing things to happen later on in the week. Let’s hope it all turns out as it should in the end. I hope you all had an amazing start to your week!

Farewell Summer

Monday, September 21st, 2009

This weekend I bid farewell to summer the proper way, by visiting the Brooklyn Flea with my favorite Aussie, Lyssa, who happens to be in town from Sydney.

The Flea is still officially open for one more week, so try and get down there next weekend if you’re in the area. (I’ll be down south enjoying my long awaited summer vacation)

The flea was amazing this weekend, mounds of vintage clothing designer shoes intermingled with outrageously oversized furniture accents, antiques, and delicious food.

It’s all you could ever want in one weekend. I also got a head start on my Christmas shopping!

Apartment DIY: Accessory Organizer

Monday, September 21st, 2009

It’s not the most original DIY project, but it is rediculously simple and does a great job of reducing clutter while organizing your jewels!

Last weekend (with the help of some family and friends) I gathered the necessary  items to finally put together an accessory wall organizer.

The final product can be seen here:

I haven’t hung all of my jewels and accesories up yet, but I wanted to share how you can make your own.

What You Need:

- empty frame. My boyfriend found this giant one on the sidewalk on his way over to my apartment one day. We thought about painting it, but once it was cleaned up a bit I decided I liked the worn “shabby-chic” look a little better.

- pegboard cut to size. Home Depot will usually cut this for you on site, but the day I went they were sold out of full sheets and their saw was broken. We made due with a hand saw at home.

- Various hooks and hardware made for pegboard organizers

What to Do:

- Cut the pegboard to fit just inside the gutter of the frame.

- Screw / staple / secure into place. (I used screws with large washers to hold all of the pieces in place)

- Hang the frame from the wall and begin to design the layout of your board with your hooks!

See, so ridiculously simple that I almost didn’t even need to type that out for you.

You can get very creative with the hooks, using different shapes for different types of jewelry. Big earrings can even be hung on the pegboard holes by themselves without hardware.

Long Row of Hooks; Perfect for Long Necklaces

Hooks Usually Intended for Hammers Work Great for Hanging Necklaces and Dangling Earrings

Organizing jewelry and various hair and outfit accessories can be a vary tedious task, so if you have any suggestions for how to keep your closet organized please share!

Back to Business

Daily Outfit: September 17, 2009

When:
September 17, 2009

What:
Denim Pencil Skirt: JCrew
Grey Vneck Tee: Old Navy
Necklaces: Vintage Thirfted and F21
Shoes: Marc by Marc Jacobs via Beacon’s
Sunnies: West Village Street Vendor

Where:

Work and Wherever the Wind Takes Me There After!

Why:

I LOVE these shoes that I wore to the Chictopia party. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE.

So I obviously couldn’t just sit back and watch them collect dust in my closet! Out they came again today, but this time paired with something a little more simple. I’ve been going for easy and simple all week (and subconsciously wearing a lot of navy and grey). I’m just going to chalk that up to Fashion Week getting the best of me.

I promise to be on the prowl for more color this weekend and come back next with some exciting goodies. Maybe I’ll finally find my perfect pair of nude peep toe pumps?!

Dear Universe

Thursday, September 17th, 2009
Dear Universe,

I am enlisting your help.

After my recent thrifting luck with a certain sequin jacket that has been on my wishlist for a while, I have decided to share a secret wishlist item I have been OBSESSING about recently. That is, a nude patent leather peep toe pump.

Not too much to ask for right? Wrong.

I can’t find the perfect shoe anywhere, and where I can find decent replacements for my dream pump, the prices are simply too far out of my range.

Here is what I am looking for: Size 9. Nude, Beige in color. 4-5 inch heel (preferably stilleto). Patent leather with neutral or statement lining/inner sole.

Below are some examples of my inspiration for this amazing shoe that I WILL FIND! I am just so surprised brands like Aldo and Steve Madden haven’t release their own version of such a simple staple.

I have found a lot of ugly metallic linings, contrast piping, sizes that are too small, and suede shoes… but that’s not what I’m looking for! The nude peep toe elongates your leg and makes even jeans look so chic and dressy.

Argh! These are the things that keep me up at night.

So I am putting it out there, and enlisting my readers and the willful power of the universe to bring my perfect dream shoe to me… or provide me with the funds to purchase any of the following beauties.

End of the Road

Daily Outfit: September 16, 2009

Jeans: BDG via Urban Outfitters

Work and Straight Home to Take a Nap and Cook a Homemade Meal

Why:

I was trying to put together a good work outfit that was easy and simple, while looking somewhat appropriate to attend FWNY events at night. Well, halfway through the day I decided I had pushed the envelope far enough, and that my body really deserved a rest. So off to Brooklyn I ran to take a nap and recover from the whirlwind awesomeness that has happened over the past week.

Fashion week has also meant neglecting my duties as a girlfriend / new roommate and I felt the boy deserved a good home-cooked meal and some company.

I want to thank everyone who hosted an event (including but not limited to: Market Publique, Fashion Camp, Fashism, IFB, and Chictopia) and I want to give a little shout out to all of my new friends I met this week. I am very excited about all the new blogs I get to follow!

Well for now this Brooklyn fashionista is beat. You hear me fashion week, you won! But don’t worry I’m sure next year I’ll be ready to give FWNY a run for it’s money.
