Things I Love: Fashion Documentaries

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

With all the rain we’ve had recently, I’ve been thinking about rainy days. You know, just sitting at home, enjoying being warm and dry, watching some movies?
I love movies… when I have the time to watch them. And if you take a look at my netflix account, you’ll see that most of my favorite movies are documentaries.

I love all kinds of documentaries (from Man on Wire, to WordPlay, to Who Killed The Electric Car?), but my absolute favorites are Fashion based documentaries.

So, with the recent release of The September Issue, I thought I would share some of the greatest docs about fashion, style, and some of the most influential people in this industry.

Hope you enjoy!

Fool In The Rain

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

When:
October 27, 2009

What
Grey Skinny Jeans: Heritage 1981
Ruffle Henley Sweater: Gap
Bumble Bee Pattern Wellies: JCrew, Gift
Reversible Vintage Trench: Etienne Aigner (was my mother’s)
Purple Pashmina: Street Vendor in Rome

Where:

Where else would I be on a Tuesday? Work

Why:

First off, it is supposed to rain non-stop until Wednesday afternoon. What a bummer!

What makes this dreary weather just a little bit better?

My boyfriend’s alarm clock is set to his favorite vintage rock radio station, and one of my FAVORITE songs of all time was playing when it went off this morning.

What a way to start a crumby weather day! It definitely brought my spirits up before leaving the house.

See another one of my rainy day outfits here.

I knew I was going to have to run out into the rain at least a few times today so I wanted an outfit that was cute enough to impress during meetings in the office, but comfortable and durable enough for working in the field. (A big part of my job is sourcing fabrics and trims, and checking in on factories, pattern makers, and sample showrooms)

Most of the girls in my office wear tees and leggings, and I’m beginning to understand why the athletic gear holds such appeal.

I promise to withhold from buying a pair of Uggs (I shudder at the thought) and pairing them with leggings everyday, but I may need some help to keep me motivated and getting dressed up every day… especially when I come home so late.

I know this outfit kinda looks like leggings and tee (at least in these pictures), so maybe I didn’t do my best at working the pieces to their fullest.

We’ll just have to see what tomorrow brings and what crazy concoction I pull out of my closet in the morning.

Take A Walk On The Wild Side

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

When:
October 26, 2009

What
Jeans: Uniglo
Chiffon Ruffle Blouse: Twelve by Twelve
Black Tank Top: Gap
Leopard Print Wedges: Tahari, Gift from Mom
Sunnies: Urban Outfitters

Where:

Back to work!

Why:

Special thank you to my mother for thinking of me when she saw these wedges!

When I first brought them home, my boyfriend greeted me with,

“Hello there, Janice!”

A little harsh, right?

Okay, okay, I’ll admit I’m not one for loud trends (such as animal print) but these wedges just seem to work.

I like the pop of print and color they bring to my wardrobe, and today they wanted to be worn.

So there you have it! My walk on the wild side.

I am really excited that this blouse has so many possibilities! I played around with it all morning and then just decided to go for comfort and ease by not styling it up too much.

I’m excited to see what else i can do with it. I haven’t found a sheer blouse I liked, in my price range, in a very long time.

Today’s forecast was for a warm and balmy 65, but the cool breeze, and the site of workers building the ice skating rink on Bryant Park made it feel a lot chillier.

I won’t be able to get away with wet hair in the morning for much longer!

Happy Monday people!

A Very Productive Sunday

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

Daily Outfit: October 25, 2009

When:
October 25, 2009

What
Dress: Silence and Noise
Tights: Anne Klein
Cardigan: H+M
Shoes: Payless
Belt: Ralph Lauren
Sunnies: Versace (sample sale)

Where:

Errands in Williamsburg and Manhattan

Why:

First off, I wore a really cute outfit out shopping yesterday, but I didn’t take a photo and now I’m kinda upset because I think Saturday’s outfit was MUCH cuter than Sundays. But it’s so hard to take a daily photo and get these blog posts up! Does anyone else have this problem? No time to take photos on the days you like your outfit the most?

Anyways, I wanted to wear color and a dress today because it was so hot, and I knew I wouldn’t need a jacket. I actually didn’t wear this outfit, I changed into a grey cardigan just after taking photos because I thought it looked cuter and felt more like me. But I didn’t want to have to go take more photos… at that rate I would have never gotten out of the house.

Before these photos were taken I had already gone through 4 shoe options, 3 colors of tights, a necklace, and two sweaters. Getting dress is so hard sometimes!

Well i felt cute and wanted to get the most out of this summer/spring time dress I picked up in Georgia back in September, where it’s still pretty warm and you can get away without wearing a jacket! (so mad I don’t live there anymore).

Anyways today was a busy day of hunting down some hot apple cider, selling some old clothes to Beacon’s and Buffalo Exchange, and running around with the boyfriend.

I felt a little tingle in my throat and a had a headache by the end of the day, so I suggested chicken noodle soup for dinner to fend off any cold that might be trying to sneak up on me. (We make the best soups!) It was a delicious and now I’m feeling much better. Here’s to hoping I don’t get sick this week!!

I’m still getting used to my new 60+ hour work week , so threes no time for the flu.

Hope you all had enjoyable weekends!

One Day At A Time

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

Daily Outfit: October 23, 2009

When:
October 23, 2009

What
Tunic: Zara
Jeans: BDG
Boots: Target
Necklaces: Souvenir from Paris and F21
St. Croix’s Hook Bracelet: Gift

Where:

Work

Why:

I first bought this tunic to wear as a blouse tucked into a pencil skirt for an interview about a year ago. Then I stitched the slits in the side seams closed to make it more of a “dress” and have been wearing it with tights, leggings, and jeans ever since just to mix it up.

It’s so big and light and comfy (reminds me of a muumuu) that I just wanted to throw it on this morning to be comfortable.

I made it through my first week at the new job, and got home at a reasonable hour on Friday so I could hang out with the boyfriend and veg around the house a bit.

Well there you have it, nothing too spectacular… just an altered tunic that jumped out at me today.

Hey, Remember That Time?

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Daily Outfit: October 22, 2009

When:
October 22, 2009

What
V Neck Tee Shirt: Old Navy
Skirt: Kensie
Tights: Jonathan Aston
Belt: Target
Boots: ? (cheap and ridiculous, and unwearable by the end of the day)
Necklace: f21
Scarf: f21
St. Croix’s Hook Bracelet: Gift

Where:

Work

Why:

I’m not sure why, but I have had the song That Time by Regina Spektor stuck in my head all day… hence the blog post title.

It was supposed to be 70 degrees today. I mean really; how do you go from freezing cold to 70 degree weather in a week?! Crazy global warming.

Anyways I wanted to dress for the weather with comfortable flats, knowing I was going to be running around a bit today at work. Well half way through the day I lost a heel. Then on the train ride home I notice a ridiculous amount of “ripping”, “peeling”, and other kinds of nasty ugly things you don’t want to happen to your shoes.

These are the shoes I mentioned in this outfit post, warning you against ordering from unknown online vendors (did not intend to repeat the entire bottom half of the outfit… oops!). Well lesson learned. This weekend I plan to get a pair of QUALITY boots that will hopefully last more than just the season.

Special thank you to Jake for the beautiful photos! He’s been so helpful this week!

Nothing Rhymes With Purple*

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

Daily Outfit: October 20, 2009

When:
October 20, 2009

What
Shirt Dress: Banana Republic via Beacon’s Closet
Cardigan: Zara
Tights: Anne Klein
Belt: Ralph Lauren
Boots: Ralph Lauren
Necklace: F12

Where:

Work, day 2

Why:

*Jake came up with the title of this blog post.

Trying to reinvent and pull old pieces out of the closet, I pieced this look together in about 20 minutes without any morning blogroll (so unlike me!).

The dress (previously seen here) is a simple basic that I probably won’t be able to pull off the colder it gets.

The tights and cardigan are not only season appropriate (and intended to keep me warm), but also serve the purpose of adding some color to the look. Look at me, wearing color… I know. I know. I can barely recognize myself.

Happy Tuesday / Wednesday people… I’m having trouble keeping them straight.

A For Effort?

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

So I don’t have an outfit post for Monday; and unfortunately my excuse isn’t much better than “my dog ate it” but here goes…

I started a new job on Monday; and after waking up early, making a pot of coffee, eating breakfast, and getting ready, I went to say goodbye to my boyfriend and head on my merry way. Well, as I was walking out of the apartment, Jake said the worst thing a girl could here; “Is that a hole?”

Yes.

Yes it was.

A hole, snagged in the back of my favorite little black work-appropriate dress.

In a hurry to find something else to wear I threw on a bunch of basics and ran out the door, fearing I would be late.

I didn’t have time to take a picture, and I would consider yourselves lucky for this… I looked/ felt like a cross between a penguin and a waitress.

For your reference, I wore: Black tulip Kensie skirt, Land’s End White Button Down, Grey Zara Cardigan, Vintage Gold Necklace, Vintage Gold Bracelet, Black Tights, and Vintage Ferragamo flats (brown leather and black suede! so pretty).

So needless to say I haven’t had the time during the day to peruse the internet, read other blogs, tweet, and of course blog myself. I miss it already. I really do. And I intend to find as much free time as possible to keep my hobby going and growing.

This little creative side project is so fulfilling, especially when people comment or when I get featured on the homepage of Weardrobe (like I did today!). So thank you to all of my loyal friends, family members, and “fans” (that means you Wisconsin!).

I love hearing your feedback and feeling like we can connect on a daily basis even when we’re not in the same city.

So thank you, and once again… I ask you for your patience with my sporatic blogging habbits. Thank you.

The Ol’ Run Around

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Daily Outfit: October 18, 2009

When:
October 18, 2009

What
White Tissue VNeck: JCrew
Mustard Cardigan: JCrew
Jeans: BDG
Boots: Target
Necklace: Target

Where:

Errands in Brooklyn, stopping by Shop & Bop to visit Sammy D, and a dinner party with old roommates.

Why:

Wanted to look cute and colorful, but still be comfortable while I was running around today. Added a bright cardigan and this bobble necklace to give the bland “t shirt and jeans” look a little more pop.

Lots of errands and things going on, off to go take care of more!

Marché Saturday

Monday, October 19th, 2009

Daily Outfit: October 17, 2009

When:
October 17, 2009

What
Grey Sweater: Banana Republic
Blue Flared Skirt: Kersh
Tights: Free People
Boots: Ralph Lauren
Lapis Globe Necklace: Ebay
Belt: Ralph Lauren
Purple Scarf: Street Vendor in Rome, Italy
Purple Pea Coat: Barney’s New York

Where:

Union Square Farmer’s Market, Movie, Dinner, Shopping…. aka all over downtown Manhattan

Why:

I wanted to look cute and “dressed up” but dressed down enough to be comfortable all day. I love the fun flare of this skirt, the cozy cashmere feel of the sweater, at the height and look of a knee high boot.

Usually I am not a fan of white tights (they make you look like a nurse) or tights with vertical lines or patterns (they’re very hard to keep straight all day long), but this particular pair is kinda growing on me.

So I put it all together and prayed for the worst, all while keeping warm in my favorite pea coat; which I think is purple, but most people argue it’s blue… kinda like Barney, I always thought he was more of a mauve / maroon than a royal purple color.

Anyways we had a great weekend. You can read more about it here.
