Weekend In Review

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

I want to apologize for my absence as of late, along my slow posting habits.

You know how one day you wake up, (or one night you get a phone call) and then suddenly your whole world is turned upside down. It’s like you’re waiting in the security line at the airport, taking you time, planning on getting a latte and sitting by the gate before your flight boards; And then, they open a new security line so things can move faster, and the attendant directs you to be the first in that line, and it catches you all off guard and now your speeding through the process and suddenly at the gate waiting for your flight a lot sooner than you thought you would be; AND THEN you get bumped to an earlier flight, and upgraded to first class, and handed a mimosa and told to relax? Well my life has kinda been like that for the past week.

I have neglected friends, phone calls, emails, and blog posting. And therefore I apologize. I would like to thank those who have been sending me good vibes, facebook posts, tweets, and emails, and especially those friends who take me out for margaritas when they know I need one.

Alright, I got that out of my system. I will keep you all updated on my new life as soon as I can, but in the meantime, just understand that I am going through some changes.

To recap the weekend:

The boyfriend and I had FAR too much fun at the Union Square farmer’s market, and kept cursing that we couldn’t really buy anything because then we would have to carry it around ALL day and night (we finally got home at 11:30pm).

I especially had my eye on a beautiful burgundy colored potted mum… guess I just have to wait until next week.

We did come away with an amazing cup of hot apple cider (my favorite) and a few goodies for family and friends.

Then we went shopping. May I note that it is impossible to go shopping with a boy. Utterly impossible. After trying on multiple pairs of jeans, and getting into a heated argument about the appropriate color of denim for work and play (I had two sales reps. on my side!), the boyfriend walked away with TWO new pairs of jeans. This is a breakthrough moment people! Let me bask in it’s glory.

Once he got the shopping bug, my boyfriend was picking out hats, shirts, and jackets like a pro! I am so proud.

Then we went to see Where The Wild Things Are. I am SO glad I bought tickets five days in advance. The place was PACKED. Lines to get tickets, lines to get popcorn, and a waiting line to get into the theater that wrapped around and down the hallway and back again. It was insane!

The movie was SPECTACULAR! It was like my childhood, wrapped up in 2 hour Spike Jonze package. Love.

Also, Karen O is my hero.

Also, I automatically love any movie with Catherine Keener (especially when she plays a mom).

Then we wandered around New York for a good few hours, stopping by Washington Square park, and getting lost in the West Village until we found the perfect little Italian place. We ended the night with a pair of cupcakes from Magnolia Bakery. Perfecto.

On Sunday I enjoyed a lovely breakfast in bed, a quick workout, and a trip to Williamsburg for the Bop & Shop to visit the lovely Sammy Davis of Sammy D Vintage.

Now we’re off to a dinner party in Manhattan at my old apartment with my old roommates!

Hope you all had magical weekends!

Events: Anniversary Weekend

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

Well Tuesday was my boyfriend and my anniversary.

Exciting right? Not exactly…

I never thought moving in with someone would mean seeing him less.

It’s true. Welcome to the life of a twenty-something New Yorker during a recession.

You take the jobs, shifts, and opportunities you can get, then deal with your social life later.

The boyfriend and I have completely opposite work schedules. We probably will not even see each other (aside from the 10 minutes he takes to wake me up at 1am to say “goodnight” and when I wake him up at 7am to say “good morning”) until Saturday.

As a result, we are postponing celebrating our anniversary until this weekend.

But don’t worry, I already have most it of it planned out.

Here are some of the things on my list:

Where The Wild Things Are comes out at 12am on Friday!

I’ll eat you up I love you so!

(yes, I have already purchased tickets)

Get your vintage on at the Sunday Shop & Bop in Williamsburg.

Shop some lovely vintage or look for a halloween costume with In Your Closet NYC, Fox and Fawn, Hatchetface Vintage, and Sammy Davis Vintage.

There’s supposed to be music and live DJ’s all day, so I am very excited about this one!

Remember The Limited?

Thanks to a rebrand and major campaign to connect with a younger market, The Limited launched a Pop Up shop in SOHO this week!

Saturday is the last day, so of course I’m making an effort to stop by and scope out the goodies!

What are your plans for this weekend?

Black & White

Daily Outfit: October 5, 2009

When:
October 5, 2009

What:
Button Down Oxford: Land’s End
Skirt: Kensie (50% off!)
Tights: Jonathan Aston
Wrap Kimono Belt: H&M
Boots: an online shoe store
Necklaces: F21 and souvenir from Sacre Coeur, Paris

Where:

Work

Why:

Happy Monday! Wow, there is so much going on with this outfit (even though it doesn’t look it), all of the pieces have stories behind them!

Alright, I started with the button down shirt. I was looking for a chambray-esque masculine oversized button down and absolutely fell in love with the way Beth was styling hers, and it was from Land’s End of all places! I’ve had mine for a few weeks, just hanging in my closet, so I figured it was time to break it out.

The skirt I bought on crazy reduced sale from one of my favorite little shops in Savannah, Custard. I met Tara through the magazine I worked for in Savannah, and she has been a huge help styling me for major interviews and events.

The tights are Jonathan Aston. This weekend, while I was home in Boston, my mom took me to the Friends & Family sale at Bloomingdales. I bought a few things the first day, but kept eying these beautiful sheer tights with delicate polka dots. The original price was far too much for me to consider for an accessory I will most likely rip and ruin the 3rd time I wear them, so I opted not to get them.

That night I surfed the internet to price compare, and even though I found cheaper versions, with the added shipping changes there really wasn’t much of a difference. We went back the next day to grab them and some more goodies with our great discount, which worked out well as we ended up walking right into a champagne reception and bridal fashion show held by a local magazine. We got amazing goody bags, lots of freebies, nibbled on cake and sipped champagne all morning. It was amazing. AND I got my fabulous tights. What a happy ending!

The boots are from an online vendor that I don’t remember the name of, and frankly I don’t care as I wouldn’t want to give them publicity or recommend them to any of my readers. I had a horrible experience with customer service and shipping and it took weeks to get my package. The boots are fine, exactly what I expected, but I would sooner run down to DSW than deal with an online merchant like that again. Beware people! Only shop online with merchants who have a creditable reputation or have been recommended to you.

Well that’s a mouthful! Making up for not posting over the weekend I guess! Hope everyone has a great week!

FWNY Events: Chictopia Party

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

As you read in my outfit post, Tuesday night I headed back over to Broadway East for the Chictopia party.

I had heard lots of lovely fashion bloggers were going to make an appearance, so I skipped the other events on my calender to attend. When I arrived the scene was VERY different than the night before.

Same line outside wrapping around the block, but this time I didn’t recognize a single soul. I waited patiently and finally got inside to grab a drink and walk around, only to notice the place was bare!

Groups of people were dinning at tables as if they had ordered dinner, the bartender was ignoring his two patrons (myself included), and a second line had formed at the exit where girls were anxiously waiting to receive their goody bags before jetting out the door. I decided to wait until I finished my drink before trying to grab a goody bag and make an inconspicuous exit (hard to do when you’re 6 ft. tall in heels and wearing sequins).

Then, just as I  was about to give up hope and head home, I spotted Jennine outside snapping photos of Susie. I ran out to say hello and was soon introduced to Jeanne. We headed back inside for a drink and before I knew it I was chatting it up with two lovely and super sweet ladies, Nikki and Mel.

From then on the night was a blur. I snapped a few photos, met some lovely bloggers, exchanged business cards, and topped the night off by grabbing a bite with Jennine, Pamela, and Jeannie in the Lower East Side.

Lesson of the night: Stick it out, you never know what can come of it. You make your own fun and your own experience, so put on a smile and go meet new people! You will only get out what you put in.

FWNY Events: Fashion Camp

Monday, September 14th, 2009

This past weekend, as part of FWNY, I attended Fashion Camp. Fashion Camp is a two day barcamp unconference-esque event where all attendees act as participants and are welcome to share,  present, and interact with other “campers” in an effort to network, bridge gaps between industries, and talk about fashion (of course).

I attended sessions ranging from topics on networking and using social media to promote yourself and your business, to a DIY workshop, a Fashism demonstration, and a “Hacking Couture” workshop. During the course of the day I met so many interesting people, and was able to interact and felt really empowered by the end of the morning sessions. It was a very inspiring event and I definitely recommend that anyone who will be in New York during the next Fashion Week look up this event!

Fashion’s Night Out Re-Cap!

Monday, September 14th, 2009

I spent a majority of Fashion’s Night Out at the Market Publique Pop-Up Shop in Williamsburg.

I didn’t really break out the camera until later that night, but I did meet some amazing vintage lovers and fashion bloggers, so be sure to check out their re-caps of the night as well.

Everything started off with a bang, sipping champaign, celebrating Pamela’s Birthday with delicious cupcakes, and me getting recognized for the first time! Daphra of Happy Hill Vintage noticed my outfit from my previous post here, and ran right up and introduced herself. We had a great time chatting up our mutual love for vintage with Sammy Davis of SammyD Vintage.

Then Pamela introduced me to the lovely Jennine of The Coveted and IFB fame, escorted by Jordana of Clutch22. We had great fun perusing the racks for frocks to wear to all of our FWNY events, including the IFB Dress Up Soiree on Monday September 14th.

I came away from the night with a few new bobbles and pieces myself, so be sure to check back to see my Market Publique treasures.
