FWNY Events: Fashion Camp

Monday, September 14th, 2009

This past weekend, as part of FWNY, I attended Fashion Camp. Fashion Camp is a two day barcamp unconference-esque event where all attendees act as participants and are welcome to share,  present, and interact with other “campers” in an effort to network, bridge gaps between industries, and talk about fashion (of course).

I attended sessions ranging from topics on networking and using social media to promote yourself and your business, to a DIY workshop, a Fashism demonstration, and a “Hacking Couture” workshop. During the course of the day I met so many interesting people, and was able to interact and felt really empowered by the end of the morning sessions. It was a very inspiring event and I definitely recommend that anyone who will be in New York during the next Fashion Week look up this event!

Fall Jewels

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

Girls, it’s time to dig into your costume trunks (or mother’s and grandmother’s jewelry boxes), layered bibs and glitzy bobbles are in for fall! I am loving all of the embellished, yet antique looking jewelry on trend right now.

In the midst of my move (3 more days!), I can’t really pull out all my crafting tools and do my own DIYs, but I wanted to put together a little wall of inspiration, grabbing pieces from all ends of the fashion universe, but unfortunately to my delighted surprise all I could find were absolute steals! Stores like Forever 21, Target, Urban Outfitters, and Kohl’s have the best jewelry for fall (which also happen to be the best prices). So ignore to lack of diversity in my trend board. Rejoice at the fact that you wont have to spend so much to look so good this season.

The Glamourai posted a similar post on her blog yesterday, outlining a DIY for how to create your very own fringe bib necklace using broken chains you probably have sitting at the bottom of your jewelry box right now. Check out her DIY here, and if your budget is a tad bigger than mine, check out her beautiful handmade creations at the Glamporium!

The Sartorialist

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

Ok, everyone’s posting this graph from Refinery29, and I hate to be a copycat, but Jessica’s story about Scott inspired me to share too. And I’m sorry but this image is too funny not to share.

The Sartorialist

So here’s the story:

Fall Fashion Week 2008, Mariel and I had just come from dressing the Yigal Azrouel show (where I dressed Kim Norda, and met with Nina Garcia and Kelly Cutrone (!!) but that’s another story for another day).

We headed over to Bryant Park to see if we could sneak in and dress some shows, or at least people watch. Nothing was really happening and we were both tired and ready to go home, but as soon as we got up to leave Mariel spotted Scott.

He was walking with purpose, dragging a leggy young girl behind him. We watched in silent shock as he planted her in the perfect sunlit spot next to the tent. He spent about 5 minutes styling her, removing accessories, posing her, and then finally snapped a few pictures. It was amazing to watch such a master in action.

I never in a million years imagined I would spot him in New York, and a was far too shy (and embarrassed at what I was wearing) to go up and talk to him. To this day I still don’t know what I would have said. Sometimes I think it’s better to just sit back and watch it all happen instead of trying to grab the moment and go up and introduce myself. Anyways, it was my first real-life brush with the world of fashion blogging, and strengthened my purpose to make inside the tents the next year.

Eye Candy

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

Nomenus Quarterly, the “World’s Most Expensive Magazine” according to the New York Times, is positioning itself at an even higher level of elitism.

Editor In Chief and Founder, Erik Madigan Heck, has cut back the print run by 80%, releasing only 10 issues at an elevated price of $6,500 per book. The magazine is a collaboration of previously unpublished works by an array of renowned artists and designers from a multitude of disciplines. The most recent issue features ubiquitous artists like Ann Demeulemeester, Katie Paterson, and Dries Van Noten.

I think Heck is making the right move here, keeping the idea of a luxury brand alive in a failing economy; by reducing access and increasing cost the item becomes even more desirable and elite. The images are so captivating and the idea is so ingenious that I applaud young Heck’s entrepreneurial venture.  I am personally, very interested to see how different luxury brands position themselves in the coming months to survive in these struggling times.

Luckily for us bourgeois who can’t shell out $7K for a magazine, the publication is available online for free. So view away my friends! http://www.nomenusquarterly.com/

2009 CFDA Fashions

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

The 2009 Annual CFDA Awards were last night, and even though the list of winners (see below) did not disappoint, my favorite part had to be the red carpet.

This year was full of individual style. Everyone looked absolutely perfect for the occasion, but no one looked the same. Bright colors, metallics, and body conscious silhouettes conquered the evening, but each in their own spectacular way.

Click on the images above to see my comments on each of my favorite girls of the evening!

Fashion Swoon

Friday, June 12th, 2009

I love Fashion Toast. She has a very relaxed and casual style, but always seems to dress it up enough so that it’s edgy and interesting. She just wearing cut-off jeans and a white tank top, but its so chic! Anyways I love this look she posted today. I especially LOVE that ring, but she didn’t credit it on the blog (so sad) Anyone know of places that sell rings like this?
