I’m not sure why, but I have had the song That Time by Regina Spektor stuck in my head all day… hence the blog post title.

It was supposed to be 70 degrees today. I mean really; how do you go from freezing cold to 70 degree weather in a week?! Crazy global warming.

Anyways I wanted to dress for the weather with comfortable flats, knowing I was going to be running around a bit today at work. Well half way through the day I lost a heel. Then on the train ride home I notice a ridiculous amount of “ripping”, “peeling”, and other kinds of nasty ugly things you don’t want to happen to your shoes.

These are the shoes I mentioned in this outfit post, warning you against ordering from unknown online vendors (did not intend to repeat the entire bottom half of the outfit… oops!). Well lesson learned. This weekend I plan to get a pair of QUALITY boots that will hopefully last more than just the season.

Why:

Wearing all kinds of goodies today. This outfit makes me feel good. And that’s good because I needed to get out of my funk. I’m working on it!

I almost feel like a 1950’s cheerleader in this outfit. It’s weird to wear flats and a skirt (so not me), but this blog is all about shaking things up and breaking the boundaries of my comfort zones. My hair is still a bit wet in the mornings (it takes forever to dry without the summer heat) so it looks a lot curlier than the loose waves I have once I get to the office, but I’m liking how my “curly hair experiment” is going. I’ve been naturally drying my hair for more than four months now, and my hair has grown about 2 inches! That’s insane! I love it.

This skirt is absolutely perfect! How could you not love a flared skirt with pockets? I had a professor in college that gave you extra credit if you put pockets in your garments, so I was always sticking secret pockets into EVERYTHING; shirts, skirts, vests, jackets, dresses, evening gowns… you name it! Plus models look better on the runway when they can put their hands in a pocket or play with something on the garment (at least in my opinion).

I bought this cardigan last Christmas from Second Time Around (in the Atrium Mall), which is a consignment store so the items are nicer and higher priced. I don’t feel right calling it a “thrifted sweater” since it’s not thrifted. To me thrift stores are Salvation Army, Saver’s, Morgan Memorial / Good Will. Then there are boutique thrift stores that are a bit more trendy, a bit more upscale like Beacon’s Closet, The Garment District, and Buffalo Exchange. Then there are consignment shops, both franchises and independent boutique, flea market sellers, and online merchants. ‘

It get’s confusing! How do you define “thrifted”? Is it the price? The store it came from?

I LOVE these shoes that I wore to the Chictopia party. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE.

So I obviously couldn’t just sit back and watch them collect dust in my closet! Out they came again today, but this time paired with something a little more simple. I’ve been going for easy and simple all week (and subconsciously wearing a lot of navy and grey). I’m just going to chalk that up to Fashion Week getting the best of me.

I promise to be on the prowl for more color this weekend and come back next with some exciting goodies. Maybe I’ll finally find my perfect pair of nude peep toe pumps?!

Work and Straight Home to Take a Nap and Cook a Homemade Meal

Why:

I was trying to put together a good work outfit that was easy and simple, while looking somewhat appropriate to attend FWNY events at night. Well, halfway through the day I decided I had pushed the envelope far enough, and that my body really deserved a rest. So off to Brooklyn I ran to take a nap and recover from the whirlwind awesomeness that has happened over the past week.

Fashion week has also meant neglecting my duties as a girlfriend / new roommate and I felt the boy deserved a good home-cooked meal and some company.

I want to thank everyone who hosted an event (including but not limited to: Market Publique, Fashion Camp, Fashism, IFB, and Chictopia) and I want to give a little shout out to all of my new friends I met this week. I am very excited about all the new blogs I get to follow!

Well for now this Brooklyn fashionista is beat. You hear me fashion week, you won! But don’t worry I’m sure next year I’ll be ready to give FWNY a run for it’s money.

Work and Fashion’s Night Out at Market Publique

Why:

Was far too sick to get out of bed yesterday, hence the lack of outfit photo. Today I’m still feeling under the weather, but I forced myself to get out of bed and back in action. To help me stay awake and feel alive I decided to over do it with the outfit. I didn’t want to throw on jeans and a cardi to feed my already “out of it” mood. So I pieced together a dress, lots of jewels, and high heels for good measure.

I love this dress for so many reasons; the faux suspenders in the front, the flare of the skirt, and the bell of the bishop sleeves. The dress isn’t vintage, but I’m still wearing it to Fashion’s Night Out at Market Publique.

I just hope getting all dolled up will help keep me alive and healthy enough to enjoy the night. What are you doing for Fashion’s Night Out?

I ordered this dress for the color. I’m really trying to branch out of my comfort zone and switch up my style (which could be why I look so inconsistent all the time).

I’m not completely comfortable today. This dress wouldn’t usually be my first choice, but I’m trying to branch out.  The boxy cut, the bright print, the light weight jersey, the elastic waist, the crew neck… I could go on, but my point is there are so many things going on with this dress that I would never have worn 6 months ago. I’m working on breaking all of my personal fashion rules, and going back to square one. I think this is a good experiment, and I hope to really discover my true style once I break through all the fashion “do’s and don’ts” walls that I have built up over the years.

Last night, after some post-work day socializing in the office, a few of my co-workers and I decided to hit up Fat Cat’s in the West Village for some ping pong and shuffleboard.  Needless to say it was a long night, and I did not feel like even looking at my closet this morning.

I’ve worn this dress a few times, to a Weardrobe/Market Publique event, a friend’s post-wedding BBQ and a birthday party last weekend, but I’ve never taken an outfit photo of it. This morning, the simplicity of just throwing on a dress seemed divine and the colors just make me happy.

While running out of the house, I grabbed a cute little bolero cardigan to wear around the office. It looks so cute, but I didn’t have time to snap another photo, so come back later and I’ll post one tonight.

I had a 9am meeting this morning, so I had to get up super early to get to work and prep (it was fully catered). I didn’t have much time, so a dress was perfect to throw on, and I think this will translate well for later tonight… that is, if I go. Didn’t get much sleep last night, couldn’t keep my eyes closed long enough, so I may just crash after work and go home to put on some pjs and crawl into bed. We shall see. Anyways this is me, in a furry, rocking out in my stairwell, with wet hair. Happy Thursday!

I took my day-old straight hair and sprayed some volumizing texture spray and beachwave spray to give it some life and play up the wavy, tousled bed-head look. I pulled it back in a messy ponytail just above the nape of my neck and added two elastic headbands (they’re for working out, but I couldn’t find anything nicer). Anyways I like the way it turned out.

I wanted to “dress up” today without dressing up, so a plain white Tee and a scarf say “I tried, but not too hard”. I bought this amazing blazer a few months ago and haven’t worn it. This morning I ran right to it. It has a great faint red plaid pattern to it, and works well as a jacket on these fickle summer days where New York can’t decide if it’s going to be 80 and sunny or 60 and rainy. Add big sunglasses and I’m good to go! (Got lots of complements at work today already).

Had been planning on wearing some color in honor of the Spring weather, but it was kinda chilly today AND rained during my morning commute (at least I’m getting some wear out of my trench coat!). So I paired this shirtsleeve turtleneck with a bright, embroidered skirt and contrasting sandals. It looks kinda funny but I think it worked perfectly for today’s weather.
